Benefits

It is the ideal product for smothering weeds thanks to its large weeds. This brassica has promise for controlling nematodes and other disease pathogens as it breaks up the disease cycle.

Shield Mustard can be used for grazing, but is not as preferred by wildlife and livestock as the other brassicas that we recommend.  It can also be used for human consumption, but will probably not be your favorite for the dinner table unless mixed with some other greens. It’s spicy, depending on your taste for such things!

Planting Guide

Shield Mustard prefers well-drained sandy loam. Ideal pH is wide, between 5.8 and 6.8, with an ideal soil temperature of 45 °F. The seed is best planted during the Fall, at a depth between 1/4" and 1/2”. It will require 60 lbs. of Nitrogen to grow well, and will respond well to Phosphorus and Potash, based on a soil test. This plant will grow rapidly.
