This turnip species loosens the soil and provides forage that is sought after by both livestock and wildlife. The farmers who decide to try it for themselves can’t blame the livestock for enjoying it!
Purple Top Turnips prefer Sandy, loam soils. Ideal pH is between 5.8 and 7.0, with an ideal soil temperature of 50°F or above. The seed is best planted between August and October, at a depth between 1/4" and 1/2”. Add 80 lbs. of Nitrogen, and add additional Phosphorus and Potash based on a soil test. This plant will grow very rapidly.
