Cereal rye is one of the most commonly used cover crops in the United States.

Cereal rye is a non-host for nematodes, and it has an allopathic impact on weed seeds, preventing them from germinating. Often, this reduces weeds and the need for herbicides on the following crop. Its deep roots scavenge for nutrients and bring up lost Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potash. It also provides high yielding forage for livestock.
Elbon cereal rye prefers well-drained, sandy loam but it can tolerate most soil. Ideal pH is between 5.5 and 8.0, with an ideal soil temperature of 50°F. The seed is best planted between September and early December, at a depth less than 2”. Nitrogen will greatly assist this will plant, and Phosphorus and Potash will help based on a soil test. Cereal rye will grow rapidly through cold temperatures and will give early Spring growth as well.
